The Best Halloween Events Happening Right Here In Houston

With the damp, humid air and murky bayou crawling through the ancient city, Houston always feels a little ghostly. But things get most creepy around Halloween, when ghost tours and spirits glimpses into the city's unearthly history are in full swing. There are also incredibly cute doggie costume contests and somewhat less adorable human costume contests. This year's Halloweekend bashes will feature live music, flowing boo-ze, pumpkin smashing, and moon-howlin' dance parties that will last far beyond your customary bedtime. Here's all you need to do in Houston this #SpookySzn.

Although it might be difficult to keep secrets hidden in a city with millions of residents, a big city like Houston is sure to have some secrets. Exploring is one of the best things to do in Houston. Here are a few of Houston's best-kept secrets for those who appreciate finding strange, obscure, or hidden treasures.

The Bayou's Burp Button

Visit the nearby Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern to find the secret button that causes a bubble to "burp" in Buffalo Bayou. The inconspicuous red button is located on the outskirts of downtown, close to Sesquicentennial Park, but I won't say exactly where it is. Both adults and kids will enjoy the button's explosion of a sizable bubble from the bayou. Consider timing the bubble to catch any bayou kayakers off surprise, even if it might not be appreciated.

Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

Built in 1926, the 15 million gallon reservoir in downtown Houston was deactivated in the 1970s and mostly forgotten. Then, in 2012, while working on park repairs, workers unlocked a hatch to get access to the space and discovered a magnificent cistern with endless rows of columns ascending to the ceiling. After renovation, the area is now open to the public for visits. For $5, guests may enjoy a 30-minute tour of the site where they can discover its history and even experience the 17-second echo produced by the enclosed cistern. From December 2016 until June 2017, a video art piece called "Rain: Magdalena Fernandez" occupied the space, projecting light throughout the cistern.

The Dungeon Room of the Hotel ZaZa

Locals usually pick the upscale Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District when they wish to spend the afternoon by a nice pool. But if you want to spend a staycation in one of the strangest hotel rooms in the city, ZaZa could be the place for you. The area known as the "Dungeon Room" is located on the third floor of the hotel. Although the hotel has "Hard Times" as one of its themed rooms and even has the word "Hard Times" in its official name, it is not marketed nor immediately obvious when trying to make a reservation. This room, which is around one-third the size of a conventional hotel room, contains a strange bed that is chained to the walls, a brick wall façade, and other odd artwork. The "Hard Times" room itself is odd, but guests who stay there get to use one of the hotel's largest balconies.

Lucky Land

Lucky Land is tucked between I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road in north Houston, south of Aldine. Over two acres, Lucky Land is a serene area devoted to Asian history and culture. At a moderate adult admission price of $10, Lucky Land provides a massive Terracotta Army model that fills many trenches and is identical to the army discovered in the Chinese province of Shaanxi. The Panda Village, various kung fu sculptures, tiny Chinese cities, smiling Buddha statues, and a big koi pond are further attractions of Lucky Land.

Shri Swaminarayan Temple of BAPS

This magnificent Hindu temple was built in Houston utilizing more than 33,000 distinct pieces of Turkish limestone and Italian marble that were carved in India. It is situated in Stafford on the southwest side of the city. A place of worship and devotion for practicing Hindus, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is open to the general public and features an exhibition to aid in understanding Hinduism. The 22-acre mandir offers visitors gorgeous grounds, a charming building, and the opportunity to interact with and learn about Hinduism.

14 best Easter weekend events in Houston, from egg hunts to keg hunts

Easter egg hunt

For those who observe, Easter is a holy and vibrant celebration of renewal. And for those who don't, but still look forward to the holiday, Easter means brunches and for kids, Easter egg hunts, usually starring a certain bunny.

This year offers plenty of fun for kids ready to search for eggs — and adults ready to search for Easter kegs (read on), or get their Easter yoga on. From Kemah to Simonton to downtown, here are your best bets for Easter weekend.

Friday

Blessington Farms in Simonton will have a two-day "Easter EGG-stravaganza." Enjoy picking your own strawberries and fun in Farm Funland, with hayrides, barrel trains, giant slides, animal encounters and much more. There will also be an Easter egg hunt where children will hunt for eggs with candy and treats. 10 am.

The Woodlands Children's Museum will invite kids to indulge in two-day "EggTivites." Children will delight in egg dyeing, creating a bunny mask, and embellishing egg carton baskets or a bunny box to carry eggs. Plus, there will be photos with the Easter Bunny. 10 am.

Kemah Boardwalk in Kemah will host a three-day Easter Weekend complete with an egg hunt, an Easter egg/cookie-decorating workshop, performers, and the Easter Bunny. On Sunday morning, there will be a special sunrise service at 7:30 am. Noon.

Saturday

Downtown Aquarium Houston will be open for kids and toddlers to enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet and, then, get a picture taken with the Easter Bunny. On Easter Sunday, there will be a buffet, an Easter Bunny meet-and-greet and crafts. Reservations are required. 9 am.

George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond will have a colossal egg hunt and relaxing family picnic. Bring a blanket and your own lunch to picnic under a 150-year-old oak or stake your claim at a picnic table near the Line Camp or Ranch House. There will be eggs galore and historical fun all around. 9 am.

Lone Star Flight Museum will open its doors for little aviators to join their age group and hunt for Easter eggs around the aircraft. There will be golden eggs filled with special prizes, like a museum membership or a surprise gift from the gift shop. 9 am.

7 Acre Wood is looking for people to have an egg-cellent Saturday with some barnyard pals. Go on an egg hunt, play in a Western town, zoom down the zip-line, putt away at mini-golf, snap pictures with the Easter Bunny, and more. 10 am.

Children's Museum Houston will have a meet-and-greet with the bunny of the hour — the famous Easter Bunny (or whoever will be in that suit). Kids and adults can make some colorful bunny ears to wear at the Junktion table too. 10 am.

P-G Farms in Montgomery will throw two days of of outdoor Easter fun, including an egg hunt and meet-and-greet with, yes, the Easter Bunny himself. The farm also offers activities including vintage amusement rides, farm fun attractions, duck races, games, and more. 10 am.

SpindleTap Brewery will hold an Easter Festival x Artisan Market. This free event will have 40+ local artisan vendors, delicious craft beer, free photos with the Easter Bunny, a giant Easter egg hunt, live music and food trucks. Kids and dogs are welcome. 11 am.

Eureka Heights Brew Co. will have its first-ever, Buckle Bunny Bar Hop. Head over there the day before Easter for an adult version of an Easter egg hunt, which will consist of swapping the eggs for kegs and finding as many EH brews at various bars along the 19th and 20th streets. 1 pm.

The Food Court Food Truck Park will be doubling up with two Easter egg hunts, happening around the food trucks. Enjoy face painting, a bounce house, photo opportunities with the Easter bunny, food, drinks, a dj and shopping from the multiple food trucks and vendors. 1 pm.

ROSE Therapeutic Farm & Goat Yoga in Brookshire will have a two-day, Easter egg hunt with some guest animals on hand. Meet goats, chicken, pigs, rabbits, mini horses, and Daryl the Cow, then feed and groom them while you learn about what makes each one unique. 1:30 pm.

Sunday

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium celebrates Easter with its seventh-annual, Easter Keg Scavenger Hunt. A family-friendly tradition, teams with the highest scores win prizes from local businesses. All scavenger locations are located within 1.5 miles and most within four blocks of the Flying Saucer. 1 pm.

Just southwest of Downtown, the Houston Museum District is a beautiful section of Houston that plays home to an organization of 20 museums, galleries, cultural centers, and community organizations.

It’s hard to believe the tree-lined streets were once in disarray, but thankfully, a grassroots community movement in the late 1970s turned things around, creating the gorgeous, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood we know today. With so much culture and beauty, there’s no shortage of entertainment here, including these 5 neighborhood musts.

5 Must Do Things in the Museum District

  1. Explore art, history, and culture at the museums for free – While visiting Houston’s lineup of renowned museums is pretty obvious, the free museum days they offer may not be. Some, like the innovative Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, locally and regionally inspired Station Museum of Contemporary Art and Lawndale Art Center (plus, their Mural Project), the deeply intriguing The Jung Center, and the craft-minded Houston Center for Contemporary Craft are always free. Others, like the Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Children’s Museum of Houston offer free days for either the entire museum or certain exhibits. Click here to get a full list of the free museums and free museum days.

  2. Hit the chef’s table at MF Sushi – Any meal at this impeccably fresh sushi restaurant is a good one, but it’s the omakase tasting at the sushi bar takes the cake. Omakase basically means “trust chef,” and with Chef Chris Kinjo – aka “Magic Fingers” – behind the concept, you can be sure you’ve put your trust in the right hands. Each course is as aesthetically pleasing as it is tasty, from the classic preparations to novel delights. Click here for directions.

  3. Feed giraffes and explore the gardens at Hermann Park – The picturesque Hermann Park is the place to bring anyone visiting, but locals should take trips here, too. For starters, it houses the Houston Zoo, where you’ll find more than 6,000 animals in natural habitat-style exhibits, including fan favorites like monkeys, elephants, and cheetahs. Guests can even feed giraffes at daily feedings, held at 11 am and 2 pm. Afterward, take a walk through the beautiful Japanese and McGovern Centennial Gardens. Kids will love taking a ride on the Hermann Park Railroad or a pedal boat out on the water. Click here for directions.

  4. Cozy up for a free show at Miller Outdoor Theatre – Fact: You’re not a Houstonian until you’ve enjoyed a free show at this striking outdoor theater, which becomes even more striking once illuminated at night. The theater, also located in Hermann Park, puts on a variety of programming, ranging from children’s productions and a yearly Shakespeare Festival to performances from the Houston Ballet and popular concert artists. Bring a blanket or a chair, grab some snacks from the concession stand, and enjoy the show. Covered seating is also available for free, with some evening shows requiring tickets for covered seating. For those performances, assigned seat tickets are available, on a first-come basis and while supplies last, on the day of performance only between 10:30 am and 1 pm at the box office behind the theater. Click here for directions.

  5. Unwind with a drink – Though you may come to this neighborhood for its beauty and culture, trekking through all of those museums can be quite draining. Good thing you can relax and quench your thirst at one of the district’s finest watering holes. If you’re feeling fancy, the sultry bar at Hotel ZaZa should fit the bill quite nicely. For great eats and drinks, check out Chef Chris WilliamsLucille’s, a Southern kitchen offering a great patio, weekday happy hour, and live music on Friday nights. Those looking for a divey atmosphere can seek solace at Grand Prize Bar, a two-story haunt set just outside the borders of the ‘hood. But don’t be fooled, just because GPB has cheap drinks doesn’t mean the bartenders don’t know how to craft a mighty fine cocktail. Be sure to check out their menu while you’re there.
